Do we believe Lily?

I’m not so sure. I don’t think the police would have failed to question her – his sister, at the same school – so her “it’s all my friends are talking about” sounded utterly lame, for a start: the implication “I wouldn’t know about it except all my friends are talking about it” was fake. And my bet is that her pause meant that she had suddenly realised with horror that something she had said might have put them onto it.

Didn’t she squeal to Russ a few weeks ago?

No; or at least, she claimed to Freddie that she hadn’t told Russ Ellis’s name because she didn’t know it.

Russ will at this point have felt that he had to tell the police his suspicions back in May that (a) Freddie was dealing and (b) Freddie was doing it under duress of some sort. He wouldn’t have to say that Freddie’s sister had told him so, but I wouldn’t put that past him either. Lily (with a bit of luck) may find herself in doggy do-do up to her pointy little nose.
