Just to add that I ordered the Autumn Leaf buttons and they came today. They are absolutely gorgeous, even better than they look in the photos. I needed 7 so ordered 2 sets of 4, and what I didn’t expect was that the 2 sets are different, I actually received 8 different leaves. I’m thrilled with them

I made a skirt today

Simple elasticated waist dark grey/indigo sort of colour fine knitted fabric

I practised on off cuts and the machine was happy with a bit of tension being loosened and a sort of three open stitch long zig zag stitch on the hem

I cannot guarantee straight lines but it looks ok and will be nice with my beautiful jacket B made for me

Photo may follow if Yon Bull is up to it…

Thanks - I am chuffed even though it’s not perfect

I try to do my best but when sewing from pin to pin because I can see them there are not quite perfect

Still better than Primark and will do me nicely

I told you that you could do it. Twellsy!

Use a magnetic seam guide to keep your lines straight.

Thank you dear one

I am ok with poplin so the stockinette stuff that wants to move in all ways was a challenge

Still loads of pins a good pressing and making sure the cat is not sitting on the piece seemed to work

No lining as it would be too heavy I think

A good antistatic half slip would be useful to you, Twellsy.

S&M do them in different lengths, & I am sure that they are available elsewhere

I too have an unstarted one, as well as an unfinished one obvs.

It shouldn’t be too long really, I am at the sewing-up stage, but it seems to have taken forever. Not all that surprising, I suppose, there’s 1100g of wool in the thing. It should keep me warm, if it’s not too heavy to wear.

I’ve only got two, one of which is a re-project really because the yoke shrank and has to be done again when I had thought it was done with, and the other of which is going to be for next winter at this rate, I’ve only done the polo neck so far.

It is good to know that we are not paragons who finish work and then start on the next thing

In my case I get bored with things and need to make myself finish a job before I get to play with something new

Oh FFS!

 ![IMG_20210227_195135](https://discussion.ambridgereporter.org.uk/uploads/default/original/2X/b/bb75f78758530cb233de3d720e6928df2d329ab4.jpeg)

OK circular needle fans, how do I stop this happening? The damn thing has a mind of it’s own and bits of it keep forming spirals and springing up in the way of the bit I’m actually trying to knit.

Between that and the right needle being too short to be able to anchor it (I knit Shetland-style) I’m getting nowhere very fast indeed, but with 277sts I’m not sure I have a choice.

If it were me, which it ain’t, I would turn it into Magic Loop Knitting. The way to do this is to pull a bight of the needle out of the knitting more or less opposite to the bit you are actually knitting at, and then the bit that goes twiddle will be needle on its own, rather than having wool involved too. (Once the knitting is deeper, it won’t be so prepared to curl up any more.)

It’s based on the Magic Loop technique for knitting socks or woolly hats on long circular needles, and that is explained here:

[![](https://discussion.ambridgereporter.org.uk/uploads/default/original/2X/f/f2ca0f1c823299060903d4f0d51118c14e8c53b6.jpeg "Knitting Help - Simple Magic Loop") ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mqIqRdJc68)

She goes on a bit, and the actual explanation starts about a minute into the thing.

When you do that, I find, the stitches, being closer together while you are actually working them, are more, um, tractable. Or determined. Or something of the sort. And you can keep the twiddly bit, the just needle bit, away from the pointy bits you’re actually knitting with. You don’t need to do the “pull the back needle out” bit; you can just keep on knitting until the bare needle bit is too close, and then pull it round again to be opposite the knitting-with-bit.

The Magic Loop is amazingly useful for knitting the arms of sweaters, two at a time on the one long needle, because they always end up the same length and with increases/decreases on the same row as each other. Very tidy.
