Sometimes, here, when it has been raining the cars on the drive are covered in sand. This is something I had not met before in other places, and I don’t really believe it has come from the Sahara, so my reaction is generally “Why?” ---

Fine dry sand is light and relatively easy for an energetic wind system to carry long distances. Yes, this didn’t happen ten years ago, because wind systems that energetic mostly didn’t happen ten years ago. Anything further, I fear, is for the politics thread. ---

It’s a well documented phenomenon. When lots of wind meets lots of Sahara, lots of very fine dust finds its way into the upper atmosphere (the heavier stuff is mainly for sand-blasting camels and the like). Too high and light to fall on their own, the dust particles hitch a downward lift on raindrops.
