So, who wants to help... to perpetuate the cellar?

Erm

Soda bread in Norn Iron is either soda farls made on the griddle or an oven soda made with white flour so it is gorgeous when sweetened and studded with fruit

What is called soda bread here is an oven wheaten in my world

Yes you can do wheaten on a griddle to make farls

My Late Mother used to be given a box of chocolate ginger for Christmas. One year there was a bad one amongst them, & she never ate chocolate or ginger again.

Why is it that you can lie in bed for hours, unable to sleep and wishing it was time to get up, and then when it is time and you do get up, you just wish you could go back to bed?

It makes no sense.

I find shouting at them works a treat.

Story of my life, that. Only then when it is time to get up you do go back to sleep and wake up three hours later feeling if possible worse rather than better for it.

Oh yes. Either that or you struggle through the morning, then sleep for three hours in the afternoon and again wake feeling worse for it.

And that comes as some sort of surprise?

Try shift work

A whole 8 hours to go from working 3pm to 11pm and then go to working 7am to 3 pm

With a half hour briefing/debriefing and an hour’s driving

I used to lie awake trying to sleep then lie awake scared to sleep in case I overslept

Feral’s favourite was 2-3 days of 9am-9pm, 24 hours off, then 2-3 days of 9pm-9am. (Sedentary, mind.)

When we were on 12 hour shifts (quite often in my day) it was 7am to 7pm (hopefully) and when you swapped it was finish at 7pm and start at 7am the next day or finish at 7am and start at 7pm the next day

Crucifying and trying to do active work or drive for 12 hours was not amusing

My mother made rhubarb and ginger jam every year when we had a rhubarb bed and three hungry children who wanted bread and jam when they got home from school, to stave off the pangs of hunger before prep.

One Sunday morning, many years ago and working on the fly, I created the rhubarb and ginger meringue pie.

Imagine the epic extent of my peeve, some years later, on discovering that various other buggers published recipes for it. I still maintain it is my invention.

One weekend a friend came to my parents’ house with me and found the large bowl of stewed rhubarb my mother had made to fill a year’s worth of pies for her cafe

She ate the entire bowl much to everyone’s amusement

Immodium was not yet known about way back then!

Thankfully there were several toilets handy

Including the one in the shed…

But on the other hand, rhubarb’s properties were common knowledge. Or so one would have thought.
