What have I started?
A baked-goods-provoked scrimmage, by the looks ovvit, dere.
A source of considerable pleasure, mostly, joe.
In other news, the nice sparks from opposite but one has just come and replaced our broken and useless front door light which fused the circuit every time it was turned on with a new one we found in Homebase a few days ago

which looks like nothing much but is a lot better in real life than in a picture.
He has been putting off fixing if because it has been “too cold for outside work” until today. I didn’t think today was any warmer, but he seemed to be ok with it.
You still have a functioning Homebase, Fishers? Our nearest has been empty for weeks. Similarly Brantano, which was a bit ovva life-saver for SiL when he travelled down for DS’ wedding without his dress shoes. Green trainers did not cut the mustard with DD and Brantano rode to the rescue with a decent enough pair of brogues (if one didn’t look too closely) for £8. A size too large, but they went off to charity after The Day.

The nearer Homebase, where we got that lamp, is still going. The further one (about two miles away) has apparently, at long last, actually got round to closing. (We had their stock of sparkly bog seats some time ago.)
That particular lamp is not on their web site. How do you manage that? I mean, you drive your web site off your stock control system, right? Otherwise you’d have to do twice as much work keeping them both updated…
Right, things may have calmed down enough now for me to have some bread.
Yes. That.

Oh, is there some left?
(whistles innocently)
The Homebase here was briefly some Australian company or other before it reverted to being a Homebase again, but it has stayed configured as the Australian owners had it, and it no longer has bits of Habitat in the corner somewhere.
The light is on their website: https://www.homebase.co.uk/anda-18w-led-wall-light-graphite_p471469 It is just four pages down.
It costs more on Amazon:

I have made a loaf that exceeded expectations
It started out as a boule
But it grew to occupy a whole baking sheet
I baked it
It grew more
Ummm
Would anyone like some crusty cheesy bread while it’s nice and fresh and hot?

Sounds like a successful bake ![]()
Have you sourced any buttermilk? I’d be interested to hear your views on what difference it made, if any.
This one was ⅔ yoghurt diluted with a planned ⅓ milk but in practice I just kept pouring and stirring until it stopped looking like crumbs on top.
(The dough-hook on the Great Beast did a fairly poor job of blending.)
I use the K beater to mix wheaten oven soda
My wheaten oven soda is the same as Joe’s soda bread because Norn Iron has many soda variants
I miss wee home bakeries
I think that you miss Norn Iron, Twellsy. Forgive me if I’m wrong.
We have long planned to move to the Scottish Borders, but have had considerations - Mam and MiL, primarily, but now DS who lives just south of the Tyne and is in a job he dislikes. I do wonder, if he can escape this trap and we move, how much we’d both miss Northumberland.
Just musing,

I would have thought a dough hook a bit fierce fer Soda Bread as there is no yeast to ‘work’
Mr C et moi were considering spending a lot more time in Carinthia, eventually,& when his Aged Aunt died in 2004 we had been more than half expecting to inherit her house in New Romney , so right on the coast.
She had forgotten that she hadn’t made that Will, so that never happened, & Mr C felt that as he was 70, it was a bit late for a Great Adventure
Apart from all the Poorly Darlings in Chesterfield who needed to be watched…

I miss some things about Norn Iron but the things we escaped from outweigh the good things that I miss
Most of which are probably very different after all this time
Which is exactly what you should do; the “approx 300g buttermilk” I gave in the recipe was approximate precisely because it really is down to feel. It depends on the proportions and type of flour you’re using—and will be different if you’re using a different liquid. I think the recipe I adapted gave a volume rather than a weight, but I just weighed the suggested amount then used slightly less than that that as a starting point—it’s one less thing to wash.
PS
I’m with Carinthia; I wouldn’t use a dough hook, as you don’t need to develop the gluten. Just mix by hand, or with a wooden spoon. I suppose you could use something like the Kenwood “K” beater, but it seems rather pointless, since all you have to do is mix everything together. Too much working is likely to end up with a very dense loaf—remember that the reaction starts as soon as the soda and liquid mix, so if you mix too long you’ll lose the CO2 you need to leaven it.
I always treat recipes as vague guidelines
It took years of slavishly following recipes to get confident enough to do that
My breadmaker (electric in energy) will make some nice enough stuff for Sis’ arrival, in a couple of week’s time.
Clueless azz one izz regarding bread making, yer bee izz off to bed, wishing you all a Good Night’s Sleep.
