Knittery and Stitchery and Stuff

That is simply gorgeous, Fishy.

I started my jacket on 20th September and still have 2 sleeves and the neckband to go! I just never seem to get the time.

Dear Chatelaine I will be craving your help tomorrow to work out stitches for my knitted fabric

I have cut out a slightly A line skirt and pinned the side seams and will do the lining when I get the seams done then sew them together and make an elastic channel

I have the offcuts to practise onā€¦

Hmm. Iā€™d calculate that again, given that there are >1000 in the cast-off edge alone.

Youā€™re right. That was the total from round 178 onwards; there were 30704 stitches in the garment up to round 177. The grand total is 30,704 plus 10,320 is 41,024 including the hem.

I think. Fā€™techie showed the working and is Utterly Confusing as a result.

Keep it flat, Twellsy, as the pins could pull it out of line.

Remember I arsked for a Photie/Screenshot of the stitches panel on your machine? Until I see that, I have no idea what choice there is.

It is prolly a good idea to overcast each piece before you do the side seams. Itizz certainly easierā€¦

Broadly, middle out. Or from the area of greatest colour/design complexity outward. The bonus is that when you get to the ā€˜easyā€™ background/edge bits, you motor through them. If hedgehog is a kit, is there a link?

I am Kungfused with/by this.

Whatā€™s new, you cry?

I know how tapestry works, & roughly what to do, but it seems like eye strain central, & I thought we were on wiv embroidery & ā€˜multimediaā€™ bits wiv applique & Squeakwins?

I have, obviously, missed a page or 2, which is easily done on the 'phone.

I may need an Lie Down.

Mr Cā€™ s Ancient Aunt made a tapestry piano - stool cover, in multi - coloured Bargello work, which was utterly fabulous, & a mathematicianā€™s delight.

She never did a tapestry againā€¦

There are 4 lights in my sewing room, & 3 ovvem have Daylight bulbs in. You can also purchase LED striplights, which fit into the curve of the sewing machine, & are very useful.

OMCB used to do amazing fine needlepoint. I have a firescreen she did years ago, Iā€™ll try to take a photo of it later.

One of exā€™s aunts did a twelve-chair dining-table set in Bargello work, saying while she was doing it that by the time she finished she would probably have to start all over again because the first one would have been Sat Through. I think the entire family decided quite early on in the exercise that she was stark raving bonkers.

She called it ā€œFlorentineā€.

A somewhat niche and ephemeral craft, embroidering spinach leaves.

I am doing my hedgepig
To get the hang of work done on my fancy new tapestry/embroidery frame before the peacock

I try to get to know the tools before I use them for really personal things that mean a lot to me

Of course, Twellsy, but there is no need to strain your eyes further by attempting tapestry, when you wonā€™t need it fer the peacock.

Set up your frame with linen/canvas/whatever you are going to be using. It doesnā€™t have to be the posh stuff, just a similar weight.

Thread a few different needles with colours & then practise. How close you need to be, the angle of the frame at which it is most comfortable to work, where you need to be for the best light, etc.

Practise as many different stitches as you fancy. Try sewing on Squeakwins & buttons, etc. Do some smallish concentrated stuff, & then random large swirls.

It will be quite the workout, & help you decide what suits where, & how best to tackle it.

I just thought that doing a simple back stitch and half cross stitch item would help me to get into the way of things

I can see me sinbathing with my hedgehog and the peacock on the terrace keeping me amused

Last April saw me dressmaking on the terraceā€¦

Update on the Shrunken Sweater.

I would have rung the vendors but a] they were sold out of three of the four colours I would need and b] their answerphone message said that if I left my number they would get back to me in the New Year, which didnā€™t seem very hopeful to me given that it was then two weeks after New Year already.

On Monday I followed the advice of Wiser Heads here, and rang the makers of the wool, King Cole. I spoke to a woman called Sue, who had the most lovely Northern accent (as I told her before ringing off: it made me very happy listening to her). She asked me to put all the details into email and send it to enquiries, which I duly did; I was able to include the dye lot number for the treacherous Irish Navy wool, because it was on the receipt, and tell them how many balls I needed to buy to replace the bit which was felted inextricably together. On Tuesday morning I got a kind letter from the manager, Roland, sympathising with my troubles and telling me they would send the wool I needed, and on Wednesday morning the wool arrived, free of charge. I like these people.

So I have now managed to get the number of stitches right (I had gone back fine, but failed to retain three decreases, which I restored) and am embarking on the patterned part of the yoke again. Sigh. Last time, it took me just over a month to do that bit.
