Which reminds meâŠ
Closer to home, the wonderful Jane Manning died at the end of March. An inspiration to several generations of composers and singers (including The Boss, who is one of the composers featured in her last book).
Hard to know where to start in finding something âcharacteristicâ, so wide was her repertoire (though her Pierrot Lunaire is pretty much definitive) but this, from John McLeodâs 1986 song cycle The Whispered Name is rather lovely:
Indeed it is.
Supreme control and artistry. RIP.
Thank you for The Whispered Name link. New to me.
New to me, too, I have to confess! Went looking for something I could post in her memory and discovered that. Have listened to the whole thing several times over the last day. Seems to be deleted, alasâŠ
I am a bird and Iâm honinâ me knife
Slitty slitty knife, slitty slitty knife
Thatâs all very well and indeed braw but it led me on to other things and now I am all snotters.
Thanks, joe. Silly Wizard were one of my favourite bands, in my yoof.
[Tentatively cuddles a snottery Gus.]

Used know them pretty well, back in the dayâhad some great sessions with Johnny, Phil & Andy. We lost Johnny far too young, and I only just found out about Andyâs last years.
I think we could all do with a few happier memories:
Respeck!
A few of us used to have holidays in a remote bothy, by the Kyle of Durness. Silly Wizard was one of the bands whose songs weâd play. Like:
Happy times!

Listening, again.

An excellent undertaking and beautifully executed, but not quite my bag, alas.
Fair enough, Gus

Heard this on the radio earlier and thought it rather lovely, so will stick it on as a belated birthday treat (I hope) for Soo & Twellsy - and it might help cheer up a scalded Gus, too:
Fab - thank you.

Again from the radio, this.

Love it - but I wish people would remember that it was actually written by Paul Desmond, not Dave BrubeckâŠ
