Ah, as a holy fool he can have no partiality in, or even understanding of, the situation.

“Familial”? In this context, the writer means “between the only two living members of this human family”.

But that is not what familial means. It means " of, relating to, or characteristic of a family", or “appearing in individuals by heredity”, or even “appearing in a group of people or things that are related by common characteristics, features, or properties”, and has been used about the trees at Chernobyl among other groups with common features.

I wish people would stop using a random word that sounds a little like what they mean; in this case, for “familial” read “family”, or better yet “mother and daughter”, since that is the only Tregorran family that seems to exist.
