Isn’t it the opposite? Freddie has been selling drugs, he was just pretending they were merely pro plus to get Lily off his back… Hence the reason Ellis has started putting bricks through windows. As an aside - if Ellis is supposed to need Freddie as his “in” with the rich kids, why does Ellis have the more refined accent?!

On 9th April Freddie turned Ellis down flat when Ellis wanted him to deal for Ellis, and absolutely refused to deal for him again. At the beginning of May Ellis beat him up for (according to Ellis) having been seen selling pills to someone. If he did want still to be a dealer after his having been one had nearly caused the death of his cousin in front of him and in the same way his father had died, would he not simply have gone back to Ellis?
It seems a lot more likely to me that Freddie, who was badly frightened and upset in January by Noluthando’s behaviour because of the drugs she stole from him, is telling the truth, was not dealing, and has now been dropped deep in it by Lily making assumptions she had no business to make, and sneaking on him to her clandestine lover.
