I have recently been reading the IET Wiring Regulations in support of an small electrical project. The vast majority of them really do seem to be âdonât be stupidâ and âdonât make things harder than you have to for the next sparkyâ.

These days I usually have a phone, but that doesnât stop me carrying one when I go out.
(Many years ago I was in a pub when something went under the table, and everyone said âaha, I have a torch function on my phoneâ. I think the quickest to get it running was 30 seconds, and at least two people were stuck on âpay now or wait a minuteâ registration screens. This may be part of why I waited a while to get a smartphoneâŚ)

The pub near our last house had e power cut one year and a smart Alec had a huge torch that lasted for ten minutes
My Aladdin oil lamp gave better light and lasted for the duration of the power outage
