Whereas I am of the belief that gin is merely vodka with pretensions occasioned by the addition to it of a not-very-pleasant taste.

Historically, gin is what you make when you aren’t yet good enough at distilling to make vodka without a nasty taste.
(This is why the idea of artisanal gin seems so silly to me.)
