Ah, a nice point.

The former, which I think is slightly better than the latter, since I’d rather all the bears were sleepy than some hibernating while others wide awake. Mr Janie, when I first came to Canada, said that bears ‘semi hibernate’. I accused him of making that up. I still think he was, but a park ranger sort of confirmed what he said. They sleep the winter away but don’t actually hibernate.

Ach, always keep a sugar-smeared toddler to hand and you’ll be fine…
(See A Walk in the Woods, B. Bryson, where the bear bites off the brat’s hand. Smeared with honey by the parent for a photo-op, Iirc, rather than ‘thrown from the sleigh as a distraction’.)

shouldn’t be a name. It’s an effect, or a method (cf Schartz-Metterklume) or even a chunk of ordnance, great in tests but a pig in the field…
