Alas it turned out to be Violet’s swan-song; she died a couple of hours ago. The sweetest-natured little hen that ever was - liked nothing more than to be held and stroked, and turned out to be a wonderful mother to the last clutch of chicks (none of whom was actually hers, biologically, but she wasted no time in appropriating the eggs!)
