I very much hope that you are securely glued to a seat and not wobbling about on your poorly hooves, Gus!

We are still in the grip of this Epic & Biblical thunderstorm
The rain eased orff for all of 10 minutes at around 11am
Sigh
Carinthia.xx
I am seated - hurrah. Not everyone is, and there is a certain amount of disgruntlement in the air.
Gxx
Disgruntlement is entirely reasonable. I so wish that the train operators would stop treating their customers as ruddy cattle.
Off for a walk - in the wind and rain.
Soo xx
The rot set in when they stopped thinking of the people using the trains as passengers to be conveyed somewhere, and started to think of them as customers to charge money.
Gus, I hope the Ma is ok and all well.
Thank’ee, Fishy.
Will update when I can. Meanwhile, where’s the Gin trolley?
[squeakity] [squeakity] [squeakity]
Only £500 a sip, and the alternative is facing the rest of yer journey sober…
A sight for sore eyes. There are times to economise: this is not one of them.
Tut tut, Fishers. Remember that services improved after privatisation. Count yourself lucky you’re not like all those wimpish Europeans who have to be bribed to use their nationalised trains by things like reserved seating, low fares, decent food and reliable services. Deutsche Bahn even sank so low as to hand out free snacks, last time I used them.
Veering dangerously close to the political here, I think that most studies accept that subsidising a mass transport network generates more value than it costs (because people who can will now use the train rather than putting wear and fuel use on their cars, shipping goods by road, etc.), but if your orthodoxy says that each individual thing must be profit-making in its own right then you can’t allow that to happen.
Quite a few places in former Soviet-bloc Europe have removed tickets altogether from their light rail and tram networks, on the basis that they want people to use them rather than cars, so you just hop on when you feel like it; and not having collectors and barriers and inspectors and so on removes a massive ongoing cost too.
Am now on a small and malevolent Welsh train chugging up from Newport, where I had time for coffee and a smoke.
Then a quick dash into the supermarket for Needfuls (fags and poss Gin!) and then stand 7 at the county bus station for that rara avis, the Fownhope bus.
Indeed.
I’m sure that’s Mansfield, Dunnock
