So, who wants to help ... to frivol in the cellar? (Part 1)

It is a source of joy to me that there are lots of bats here in our house shed and garden

I wouldn’t fancy them in the house…

There was a bat in my room once when I was quite young (say about four). It hung on the picture rail and hissed at me. So I went and told my parents, and they came to have a look, discovered what it was, and tried to get it to go back out through the window.

What followed was a very careful bat-hunt with a shrimping-net left over from the summer holidays, using a torch rather than turning the lights on because my mother was sure bright light hurt their eyes, involving first my parents and then both my brothers as well. There may have been a certain amount of whooping and hallooing after they had woken up. The point at which it got into the stairwell was Exciting; eventually it was scooped safely in on the landing and taken out into the garden by a procession of five, after which we all had cocoa because it is soporific and went back to bed.

I have had bats fly in through open doors and windows

Then there are the tiny pipistrelle bats who got into the loft

We waited for them to land and picked them up before the cats realised* and carried them outside
They have such soft fur and their wings are so smooth and warm

*The cats are interested in emulating Greebo’s treatment of flying meeces

The only trouble with handling bats is that they may carry rabies, so it’s awkward if they bite you. Which if they do have rabies they are more likely to do, because it makes them aggressive.

Apparently the way to tell if they have it is “changes in behaviour” – which might be a bit hard to spot in a bat you have only met casually on a single occasion, without proper introduction…

“She used to be such a nice girl, eating moths, shrieking inaudibly all night, and now…”

(I went to a talk many years ago about bat sonar. They’d built a piece of apparatus which emulated certain parts of it, as a way of learning more. As they introduced the machine, “Field Location Echo Detection …” the audience started to groan, and sure enough the initials of the whole thing were FLEDERMAUS.)

Sure it wasn’t a wingèd serpent? ‘Bat’ is easier to spell than ‘Quetzalcoatl’…

Fairly certain; I don’t think my parents would have lied to me about it.

It’s when you have a bat clicking in one hand and an angry cat inn the other that the fun starts

The wee pipistrelles are tiny and their teeth are not up to inflicting any wound - canine teeth about 2mm long cannot penetrate my leathery paws

I have eight cold chipolatas [grinnity].
But no bats.

Yup, it’s me, don’t all keel over from shock. Been very busy and am back in Norfolk (again!) but am determined to make more time for me, and for coming here, and whatever.

Well if That Sparrer should happen to call over this way, then That Sparrer could have a go at something a bit more substantial than just eight chipolatas…
