Gorgeous walk by the sea at Pooil Vaaish this morning, sunny but breezy (18 deg) and clear blue water. TFD took a couple of photos so may post them later.

This morning began with a mystery. I picked up a wooden coathanger that had fallen to the floor in my wardrobe and I could see, in the sunshine, the name ā€˜Irene’ faintly scratched on it. Neither TFD nor I can remember ever having known any Irene. It’s a good solid coathanger though, so thanks Irene, if you’re out there reading this.

(Somewhere, Irene is saying ā€œso that’s where my coat hanger got toā€.)

You don’t have to know someone’s name to half-inch their good coathangers.
Just sayin’.

Oh, lovely!

Until you know the translation of the name - Pooil Vaaish is Manx for ā€˜Bay of Death’.

I did know, but that doesn’t make it less of a lovely spot.

The black marble that gives its name is widely used, isn’t it? They have some for the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral, and I think I have come across it as steps in the Monument too.

Pooil Vaaish is beautiful, TFM.

North Shields Fish Quay is only lovely to some ovvus. The Fishwives asked after you, Carinthia. The Knitting Wife has had to ditch the yarn, as she has quite severe arthritis…I don’t think that handling ice and cold fish is really helping. Anyhoo - both of them were in fine fettle (even the Grumpy One). Mr Bee bought fish and chips and ended up eating them in the car, azzit was bally freezing. So, I had some and now feel a bit norshus. Insalata Caprese, tonight.

Not a true marble, fishy, an unmetamorphosed limestone, but very beautiful. St Paul’s yes, and a few other cathedrals and the like I believe, but I don’t know about the Monument. The quarry is further along the coast towards the East and is very small and discreet, I’ve never actually seen any evidence of it other than on one occasion when we’d walked through the farmyard at the end of the road.

Sorry about that, Soo

I have been feeling queasy all day. The light is strange, & itizz getting quite windy.

I am fairly sure that when they had the Monument closed for renovation early this century, they replaced the stairs with Pooil Vaaish stone; I expect you could check, but I can’t find it off-hand.

I think that may be the old stairs. (It’s a beautiful photograph either way.)

And the whole building is a telescope!

I didn’t know they had such a posh website these days! Lots of lovely photos, but I like Jasper best.

I decided not to have the smoked salmon & pasta this evening, as I still feel abit queasy.

Bread & butter first, & then some soup
