< high-pitched whine >

Last night, in a fit of rare, highly specialised and surprisingly precise genius, I sustained a small steam-scald to the pad of my left index finger.
It can’t be much more than 3x3mm. It bluddy well hurts. Like, ridiculous amounts of ouch.
Sulkity.

I have found that Boots Emergency Burn Gel does actually work for the small and remarkably painful burns and scalds that occasionally happen when I am cooking; so I keep some in the kitchen to wop on when they do happen.

The trouble is, it really needs to be applied at the time of the injury, and by the time I realise it is an actual injury minutes or even hours may have gone by.

You have oodles of sympathy from me.

Thank you, me dear.
Getting mayonnaise in it didn’t help, to be fair. It is now plastered. I plan to join it in due course ;- )

In my childhood, some people used to apply butter to burns

Not in our house though

Butter doesn’t work, and grease of any kind can be actively bad for burns by a] staying hot and b] preventing air from getting to the damage. As for toothpaste! Argh!

Best immediate first aid is to run cold water into a basin or a mug, and put the hand or finger into it. Running cold water onto a bad burn may damage weakened skin and make the injury last for longer. Someone I knew swore by applying an ice-cube, but I have never tried it because I do the immerse-in-cold-water treatment on autopilot so an ice-cube would be an extra layer of faff, not to mention I suspect that extreme hot to extreme cold might further damage already damaged tissue.

(For a minute there I thought you were advocating ā€œGarlic mushrooms onnan slice of wholemeal toastā€ for a burn…)
