So, who wants to help ... to instaurate the cellar?

Frugal smuggity here.
I bought a reduced pack of two gammon steaks a while ago and flung them in the freezer. Cooked both last night and had about two thirds of one.
Today I made a white sauce with a leek, some cheese and mustard, and bunged in the diced gammon and a handful of fried sliced mushrooms. Into two small pyrex dishes, covered with par-boiled sliced potto. One, brushed with a bit of butter, is now in the oven.
Smuggity.
Carrots and peas, I think.

Oh, all right. It’s in his autobiography.

For reasons I cannot now remember, Ransome ended up climbing out of the White Russian trenches during their civil war to get across to the Red lines – I think he may have been going back to his belovĆ©d, who was Trotsky’s secretary. Anyway, there he was walking between the lines with a portable typewriter in one hand and a small suitcase in the other, and he tumbled into the Red trench only to be told he was obviously a spy and they would now shoot him. Casting about for inspiration, he saw a samovar, and said, ā€œWell, all right, but you might let me have some tea first.ā€ This almost convinced them that he was not a spy but merely mad, and when he’d got his tea he sipped it and said thoughtfully,ā€œIf you send word to Comrade Lenin that I am here, he may tell you to send me to him, or he may say you are to shoot me; and you can always shoot me later, but you can’t unshoot me if he does want to talk with me.ā€ So they sent word to Lenin, and Ransome was summoned and left them (and their samovar) to get on with the war.
