I quite liked it as I was in my own group of one rather than with the boys on the desk behind me

They relentlessly bullied me and I felt unable to say anything as it wasn’t a THING in those days for schools or parents to worry about

So my raft and I were happy together

While I remember disliking it intensely when I was an Upper Third, so nearly twice your age, I cannot say in any detail what it was I took against. Deep Gloom and Resentment come back vividly, though ;- )

I rather liked a mad bloke setting out to do something completely dappy, and actually succeeding. I knew he must have survived because otherwise how would he he have written the book, so I didn’t have to worry about it…
