I don’t quite do that, but I do frequently stop just to enjoy the ease with which they use the air.
I would love to see kites in flight
as long as they left my garden hare alone
I cannot see that they would be interested in your garden, unless your lawn is covered in small dead animals. They are carrion eaters, so if they do take live prey they don’t tend to eat it immediately – it’s an enzyme thing which I don’t understand, but they don’t digest fresh meat with ease, they need it to be a bit decayed.
As for the story of one snatching an apple from a toddler’s hand and damaging him, which I read recently, I cannot see why a kite would be interested in an apple, which it would not regard as food at all. A sandwich makes at least a little sense (though I would rather see a video of it happening than accept the word of someone on social media) – but an apple?
If the toddler were particularly obese, it might be frightened to death, and would then soon become food.
Y’know, I don’t think birds as a rule indulge in long term forward planning.
Thank you Fishy
I am just protective of my hare and not knowledgeable enough about big raptors or carrion feeders
As for social media nonsense I am with you on wanting proper evidence
The
That’s not wot the judge said. All about the conspiracy and premeditation, 'e was. As if digging a tunnel into a bank were more than the whim of a moment.
Dear wee birdie
Perhaps the judge thought you were yer bruvver
Actually, some do!
Crows collect food and hide it for later consumption. A potential problem is rivals seeing them and raiding the store, so some have been observed making several fake “decoy” caches first. These are generally in more “obvious” sites, and frequently made when they know they are being watched.
Crows is Special.
They have reflections, too.
Crows are pyromaniacs.
All the best people are.
There’s a lot of things I like about crows. Of which perhaps the most important is that they are considerably smaller than us…
Ha! Don’t believe that one.
But Himself was present at a braai where a yellow-billed kite snabbled a boerewors from a small boy’s plate. Kid had been so proud of carrying his own plate and was terrified by this bleedin’ gurt bird zooming down and nicking his sausage. Mr Kite retired to a nearby tree and consumed his prize.
That is indeed a bit of luck.
Of course, hiding food - even laying false trails - is one thing. They have to be able to get the food, too…
The jackal and the kite
Have a healthy appetite
(All right, they were Haliastur as well as Milvus.)
I didn’t know that one. Putting stones into a deep beaker so they can drink when the water level rises enough, I have seen.
Parrots are quite bright
In colour too…
I have had some Whitby Scampi today
Delicious
