Is Kim Durham back for the long term … or is it a brief, but I guess destructive), return ?
I suspect the latter. Anything which gives the reign of SO’C a punch in the eye gets a nod from me but overall I’m unsure this return has legs. I think he’ll split Justin & Lill. Set her up … and then let her have a big, BIG fall.
Oh, & is it just me or did the voice sound like an aging Baldrick ?
It might just be you, or it might just be the fact that he hasn’t yet mentioned turnips. Give it time.
You might well be right that he will split Justin and Lilian. Not sure that the rest of your scenario follows.
Oh all right, you’re on, although I’m not particularly invested in the winning ‘Matt stays’ scenario, and I don’t do ‘friendly’, and I don’t drive. Let’s say that if you want your bed to remain free of horse heads, you’d better hope you are right that Matt is only passing through.
Kim Durham has said “It’s good to be back!” but nothing about how long a term he may be back for. He is very properly button-lipped about anything in the future of any sort.
I hope he is back for the long haul because I like the actor, and I like the fact that because Matt is an outsider the scripties can write acerbic comments about the Archer family’s behaviour and give them to him – and because Kim is a very good actor the one-liners given to him as Matt are always well-delivered.
Matt was in Ambridge without any reference to Lilian quite a lot before she even came back from Guernsey; why not again?
He’ll blackmail Toby over something in Brighton, blackmail Pip over the broken fence, take over the gin business, appoint Josh as his manager, buy Great Gables and turn it into a casino before casting an eye on Grange Farm with a view to demolition and fracking…
I think he may well investigate Justin fairly thoroughly: remember his dealings with James Bellamy? Even if he didn’t want Lilian back he’d still want to keep an eye on her and protect her from any other sharks: only he is allowed to defraud her!
And if Lilian shows any sign of investing in Toby, Matt will want to find out all about him too, in case she might be backing a loser. That may be when and why the Brighton connection finally gets outed; I do hope so.
I doubt if he would be worried about troubles at Brookfield; there is nobody there whom he cares about, and Lilian isn’t involved in the place.
Welcome too Aisling! Matt did sound as if he’d done more than a Google search of Justan Idiot when they had their “formal” introduction at GG.
Knowledge is power as they say.
I did wonder whether Justin’s mention of his Rhodesian Mum was an indication he had a second passport as an exit should he need his very own Route/ Plan B, and also wondered how long it will be before Matt approaches Aniseed as official horse dope supplier to the Race course Consortium in Dubai. That would help pay off the loans for the surgery improvements.
I enjoyed Matt needling them but, Justin and Brian, honestly, they sounded like two spiteful schoolgirls, commenting on Matt’s personal appearance and sneering at the plonk. At least they gave him credit for sending the plonk as a wind-up. I know Justin is not the Master of Wit and Quick Retort, but I expected better lines for Brian.
Just to add: that crack about Kate leaving her children: it sounded all wrong coming from Matt. I find it impossible to imagine that Matt would even take on board that Kate had children or bother to think twice about her leaving them behind or, if he did, that he would spend a single second’s thought wondering if commenting on it would bother Brian. I simply can’t see Matt’s mind working that way.

In your line, you must know how jumpy ‘making notes’ can make people. As well as being blurry good fun, of course.
[/quote]Oooooh I do. And oooooh, it is.
Another speciality is to persistently not remember people’s name. It doesn’t half p them off.
I can see him being more than sharp enough to realise that the Kate situation is something that might bother JD and that therefore it could be a sore point with Brian and - since he is unaware that the Lost Art of Gossip has only recently been revived in Ambridge - a source of adverse comment from the peasantry.
Do you remember the nastiness of Brian and whichever other one of the BL board it was, on the golf course when Matt had just come out of prison?
Apparently really important big businessmen sneer to each other like spoilt third-form schoolgirls in a Chalet School story, when someone is not up to their high standards sartorially or or by class. At least, they do in Ambridge.
Someone has described Matt as having been “mischievous”, and I think that sums up why so many of us were so glad to have him back: even when he is indulging in Dark Deeds, there is a Just Williamness about him, somehow. I don’t think Brian and Justin came out of that particular bout very well, put it that way. If I’d been Justin, I’d have been as rattled as Brian patently was. (Only I don’t think Justin has the imagination: he is too stupid to realise how offensive Matt was being to him.)
