Anyone seen our joe lately?
‘a chicken coup’
Anyone seen our joe lately?
Which is the most correct?
I am excited to be here
or
I am excited about coming to this place
So long as you don’t say ‘excited for’, you’re fine;- )
'it’s exciting to be here 'sounds more natural to me, fwiw
I would say, I am excited about being here.
The one that annoys the pants off me though is ‘I am excited for the party/holiday/concert/whatever’. I keep hearing that and I always think, what? You are excited on behalf of the party/holiday/concert/whatever? WTF? Who knew parties/holidays/concerts/whatevers were capable of excitement?
You beat me! It has been driving me nuts, that one.
What about
I am excited to taste this dish
Instead of
I am excited about tasting this dish
Did I dream the What dish/innercent tseepitypost, then?
I prefer the latter phrase here, but not on propositional grounds. ‘I would be excited to etc’ is fine. ‘I am’ - no.
pedants R us
Another recent one is
To understand how life works in the valley
Instead of
I want to learn about the life you lead in the valley so I can understand your point of view better
A lot of use of “understand” where learn seems more correct
Elseboard, a wumman is wondering how best to rebuff her father-in-law’s sudden touchy-feeliness. Someone asks ‘What happens if you remove his hand or bristle?’
The latter should work nicely.
So would the former if done with a good sharp instrument.
This has amused me rather than annoyed me, but Tesco appear to think I’ve done 'em wrong…
2 products in your basket are out of stock but might be restocked before your order is picked. We’ll remind you to make amends on the day before.
How dare you order things they don’t have! Shame upon you!
Seen in the wild: ‘waxing lyrically’. What did they think that means?
The mental pictures are quite good, though [grinnity]
For many fans, looking for authours like Georgette Heyer, it is the attention to detail that they find most lacking in other novels.
Dear whatevers, this one has really got under my skin (pertaining as it does, although the perpetrator is evidently ignorant of that fact, to leather)
“I see constant baby gloves handling of kids on MN…”
Dear whatevers, that is indicative of truly muddled thinking!
Just a bit [grinnity]
Someone is trying to say that children should be handled very carefully
One I get irritated by is someone saying that they are excited to see something
I would say I am excited about seeing something
‘Excited for’ gets about a fair bit, too.
