Over to the next generation - Bran is now chief roo! (Looks quite imposing, but is only a bantam and doesn’t have an aggressive bone in his body. Very caring of all his girls - often seen with one or two of them under his wing at night!)

And we still have Mr Meeps (The Rooster Formerly Known As Trixie) - see above

The first of our flock to actually name himself. He (or as we then thought, she) would stand beside us occasionally looking up and making a pitiful little “meep” sound. We now reckon this was his first attempt at crowing. He was (and is) so sweet-natured that there was no way he was going to go when the rest of the roos were rehomed.

Something - probably a pine marten - somehow got into the coop last night. Every last one killed.

Thanks everyone. All still pretty much in shock here. It seems to be a completely random, pointless attack. A fox, say, would be looking for food - but none was taken. Possibly it was after the eggs?

Not sure where we go next. We have a couple of days’ eggs collected which might be viable, so we could get an incubator and see if we can hatch any. That way there’d still be some of the “family” around. There’s a market in Kilkenny on Saturday, so we could also pick up a few point-of-lay pullets. We’ll see.

Either way, there’s the fear that it will happen again, so we’re not sure. If we do restock, we’ll be looking at installing an electric fence.
