Mr Bee and I have spent the past well over an hour keeping watch over a juvenile house sparrow that flew into the patio door. Eventually, it hopped and semi-fluttered under some bushes, but I don’t think it was looking too clever, tbh.

Careful how you deal with that. Jilly (the manic leghorn) did that one day, so of course we all rallied round to check for any injuries while proffering comfort, sympathy and treats. It’s now her accustomed method of getting our attention—though carefully done at short range, feet first.

It was a good meal and as a deal from Lidl where the chicken actually cost 3 yo_yos with two folk well fed and enough for a second good dinner
Quite remarkable how little a chicken costs now
I remember when a chicken was a real treat
I remember when a chicken had its erstwhile happy neck wrung by Granny and we’d ploat it, while it was still warm. She made a fab chicken dinner.

I remember my Gran doing the same. Happy days, if not for the chicken.
It was my Grandad who was the bird dispatcher
He was a gamekeeper and so birds were an assortment of fowl for the table
The hens knew nowt about it, TFM. Granny was a skilled stealth assassin, it seemed.
As far as I know, she didn’t make pillows from the feathers, Gus. But I remember cleaning the range with hens’ wings. We had eiderdowns. Sigh.
